Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

このプロジェクトへの参加の経緯

これまで、私は平和活動に参加することに少なからず抵抗感を抱いていました。理由はいくつかあると思いますが、後述する「広島的心性」の影響が強かったからだと考えています。そのため、プロジェクトの発起人でありファシリテーターでもある金森真由さんから、カウラにある日本人墓地に埋葬された193名の民間人を追悼するプロジェクトへの参加を打診されたときには、少しためらいがありました。

同時に、私はカウラに民間人が埋葬されていることを知らず、自らの無知さに恥ずかしさを感じつつ、大変驚きもしました。金森さんと話を進める中で、10名の広島出身の民間人犠牲者が私の関心の中心となりました。彼ら広島出身者がどのようにオーストラリアに来るに至ったのか、そしていつ、どのように捕らえられ、なぜ亡くなったのか。金森さんをはじめとするコアメンバーがすでに用意されていた資料をもとに、私は自分なりに調べを深め、追悼作品の制作に取り組むプロジェクトに参加することになりました。

一方、私の祖母は大正初期に生まれ、原爆被曝者として2023年に亡くなりました。そのため、戦争と私は幼少期から近い位置にありました。祖母は幼少の頃から農業の傍ら、単行本を羽織の袖に隠して少しずつ読むほどの文学少女だったと話していました。子育てを終えた40代後半から俳句・短歌を学び始め、その膨大な作品の中で受賞したものを手書きの綴りにまとめて残してくれました。このつながりにも見えないような細いつながりが、私とこのプロジェクトを結びつけたのです。

1900年代を皮切りに海外に出稼ぎに行き、十数年をかけ新天地を築きながら、戦争で拘束され死亡し帰国を果たせなかった10人の広島出身者の物語。そして戦争時代を広島の庄原や福山で過ごし原爆を迎えた祖母。私は、10名の広島出身の民間人の出身地や故郷を思いながら、祖母の俳句を選び、祖母への感謝と追悼、そして同じ戦争を生きた広島の人々への追悼の意味を込めて作品を作ろうと思いました。

カウラで亡くなった10名の方々が生きた広島と最期を迎えたオーストラリア、祖母が生まれ被爆した広島、私が大学まで過ごした復興を遂げた広島と現在住むオーストラリア。この空間と時間の関係に、不思議な人生の紡ぎを感じずにはいられませんでした。この3つの時代（1900年代・1943–45年・現在）と2つの国（広島とオーストラリア）を、戦争、原子爆弾、民間人、捕虜、平和、追悼、故郷などの共通テーマをもとに、ストーリーテリングと俳句、そして一枚の写真で表現することにしました。

このタイミングにも意味があります。今年2025年は、第二次世界大戦終戦から80年の節目にあたります。戦争の始まりは真珠湾攻撃の頃でした。真珠湾攻撃に至るまでの日本の歴史と世界政治の動きをリサーチする中で、戦争には開戦までに多くの前章があることもわかりました。また、歴史的な戦争や政治、メディアのパターンが見え始め、同時に、どの戦争でも扇動されるのも犠牲になるのも民間人であることも理解しました。もちろん、2024年に被団協がノーベル平和賞を授与されたことも、大きな影響を与えました。

作品制作を終えた今も、このプロジェクトを通して多くのことを考えています。これについては後述しますが、私は戦争芸術に興味を抱き始めました。それはプロパガンダでもあり、反戦メッセージでもあります。また、過去の戦争をどのように後世に伝えるかは国によって大きく異なることはもちろんのこと、それ故に個々人においても大きく異なることにも、ようやく気づき始めました。現在進行中の戦争や紛争にどのように向き合うべきか、その中で自分はどの位置にいるのか、どのように平和活動に取り組んでいくのかが、少しずつ見えてきたように思います。

今後、私の戦争教育との関わり、「広島的心性」について、１０名の民間人の中の一人であるジャックについてなど、私の私感で綴っていこうと思っています。
